You may be hesitant at first to find a counsellor, as you may feel that it is a sign of weakness. This is a misconceived notion because it is actually a sign of strength that you are taking your emotional health into your own hands and being proactive.
It’s important to find a counsellor who you feel comfortable with and has had some training and experience in taking care of people with cancer. Your healthcare team can refer you to counsellors in your area and you can interview a number of counsellors until you find one that you are comfortable with. Here are some questions to ask a potential counsellor:
- What education background do you have?
- What professional license do you have?
- What is your experience working with people with lymphoma?
- What do you understand about the emotional response to lymphoma?
- Will the costs be covered by my insurance?
- Do you work with people who are anxious or depressed?
- Do you know community resources for people with lymphoma?
Remember to speak honestly with him or her and let them know why you want to work with them. Keep in mind, not all counsellors will be a fit with your needs. It is perfectly appropriate to “shop around” for one that will work for you.
