In 2002, Barry Reznick, a Thornhill, Ontario resident, was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s follicular lymphoma, a lymphoma in which B-cells become abnormal.
After undergoing oral chemotherapy and a round of radiation in 2002 and again in 2004, Barry was in remission for six years when a routine CT scan showed that his cancer had returned. His doctor prescribed a treatment called Rituxan, a life-sustaining treatment which is proven to reduce the number of relapses in patients with lymphomas. Barry and his wife were shocked and devastated to learn that Rituxan is not publicly-funded for all FL patients in Ontario.
Barry and his family have given tirelessly to the cancer community, throwing numerous fundraisers and raising more than $130,000 for cancer research. Yet in his time of need, Barry is being denied public funding for this life-saving drug. Instead, he will have to spend $5,077 for each treatment of Rituxan through a private clinic, costing them upwards of $60,000 a year.
Barry feels that his situation contradicts the Canadian belief system. He feels he has fallen through the cracks of Ontario’s healthcare system and wants to do everything in his power to ensure that other Ontarians do not have to fight this battle. You can send a letter to the Health Minister. You can make a difference in the lives of FL patients across Ontario!
