An Oakville family recently decided to celebrate giving rather than receiving! Together with their children, they decided that for their son’s 7th birthday party, they would ask that a donation be made to Lymphoma Canada, in lieu of presents.
“Kids’ birthday parties can be a lot of pressure for both the parents and the kids, especially for those of us whose kids don’t need one more toy or gift! But, many times, the guests want to bring a little something to honour the birthday child. So, we thought about how we can teach our kids to be honouring without being indulgent, and we thought about LC!”
LC is a cause close to this family’s heart, and has been since mom was diagnosed with Follicular Lymphoma in 2001. “We can’t expect others to donate for research, advocacy, support and eduction efforts if we don’t set the example ourselves.” By the end of the party, more than 7 families donated to the LC instead of buying gifts, and raised over $230!
Donating to Lymphoma Canada in honour of someone’s birthday doesn’t just have to be for kids! Not only is it a caring way to celebrate a birthday for a child, parent, friend, or otherwise, it’s easy to do online or by phone.
