Kelsey’s Journey of Strength! Overcoming Lymphoma cancer with Hope and Resilience!

Imagine waking up one day, unable to move your legs. One moment, life is about friends, sports, and the excitement of turning 18. The next, you are in an emergency room, facing surgery and a life-changing diagnosis.

This was Kelsey’s story, a young gymnastics coach who, in the summer of 2020, suddenly lost feeling in her legs.

“I had been dealing with rib pain for months, but when I lost the ability to walk, I knew something was seriously wrong.” – Kelsey.

At first, Kelsey’s symptoms were dismissed as a sports injury or allergies, but in July, what started as rib pain escalated. An emergency spinal surgery revealed the true cause: Hodgkin’s Lymphoma- nodular sclerosis, a cancer that had silently been growing, compressing her spine.

Every 34 minutes, someone in Canada is diagnosed with lymphoma. There are over 100,000 Canadians like Kelsey living with lymphoma, each navigating a path of uncertainty, fear, and immense physical and emotional challenges.

Kelsey faced 12 rounds of intense chemotherapy. The treatment was rough, leaving her with severe nausea that persisted long after her sessions. To reduce this, she was prescribed anti-nausea medication, but it brought its own set of challenges. She experienced unusual side effects, such as losing control of her facial muscles and fainting when getting up. Fortunately, these side effects dropped once she was taken off that medication. For an 18-year-old just stepping into adulthood, this journey was an unimaginable hardship.

But Kelsey was not alone. Alongside her family and friends, she found support through Lymphoma Canada. “In the beginning, I felt so lost, unsure of what questions to ask my doctor. Then I found Lymphoma Canada. They offered educational webinars, resources to understand my diagnosis, and connected me to a Zoom group for young adults with cancer. That group gave me some of my closest friends.” — Kelsey

The educational resources, webinars, and support groups offered by Lymphoma Canada provided Kelsey with the strength and knowledge to navigate her cancer journey. The community she found through Lymphoma Canada gave her hope when she needed it most.

Bring Hope to Life

Throughout her journey, Kelsey developed coping strategies to help her during treatment. She tried to stay active by participating in activities that brought her joy and a sense of normality. Kelsey found comfort in yoga, which helped her physically and provided a calming space for her mind.

Maintaining a routine was important for her well-being. Whether it was camping on weekends or sticking to her regular schedule, these small efforts helped her feel grounded during a challenging time. Kelsey’s experience shows that staying engaged and active is vital for emotional strength.
