The spleen is an organ on the left side of the body, near the stomach. A splenectomy is an operation to remove the spleen. It can be helpful if the spleen becomes very large as a result of the disease. CLL and SLL cells can enlarge the spleen and cause discomfort in some patients. Also, an enlarged spleen may lower your blood cell counts to dangerous levels.
